Subject: "The Korean War: 70th Year Retrospective”

General Carey enlisted in the USMC in 1945 before the end of WWII and was commissioned in 1948.  He served as a platoon commander in the Korean War in the battles of Inchon and Chosin Reservoir.  Lt Carey was awarded a Silver Star before being medically evacuated back to the US after being wounded in action.  In 1953, he earned his Naval Aviator wings.  As a Colonel, he served as the Chief of Staff for CINCPAC and later as the G-3 for FMF Pacific.  He served as a squadron commander for F-4 Phantoms in combat operations in 1967-1968.  Col Carey commanded MAG -24 at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, HI in 1971.  In 1974, BGen Carey became the Assistant Wing Commander of 1st MAW at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan.  He directed Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon in 1975.  MajGen Carey served as the CG of 2nd MAW at MCAS Cherry Point, NC, and before being promoted to Lieutenant General.   LtGen Carey was the CG of MCDEC, MCB Quantico, VA until he retired in 1983.  He earned a BS from George Washington University and graduated from the Naval War College.  LtGen Carey’s other awards include the DSM, LM with gold star, a DFC, BS with Combat V and gold star, 15 Air Medals, PH, JSCM, and multiple unit, service, and campaign awards.  LtGen Carey’s biography, The Flying Grunt, will be available for purchase.  You will not want to miss this meeting to meet this true American hero.
